Around 1815, Alexander's father moved the family from Kentucky to Perry County, Indiana and settled on land "further from the...River." [3]
Marriage and Children
Alexander married Phoebe Miller on January 28, 1824 in Perry County, Indiana. The marriage was officiated by Samuel Anderson.[4]
Alexander next appears in the 1830 Census of Clark Township, Perry, Indiana. The enumeration of his household lists 2 "Free White Persons - 20 thru 49", consistent with Alexander and his wife Phoebe, as well as 1 "Free White Persons - Males - Under 5" and 1 ""Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9." This information matches the ages of Alexander's sons: Simeon and Michael Van Winkle.[5]
Alexander's household enumerated in the 1840 census is also consistent with age and gender of his children. [6]
Alexander and Phoebe had 10 or 11 children together between 1824 and 1847:
Abraham and his wife, Phoebe Miller, and their children, Simeon, Mary, Michael, Elizabeth, Isaac, James H., Sarah, Nicholas, Emma, William T. and Martha E., are identified in a 1913 Van Winkle family biography.[7]
Land and Livelihood
In 1835, Alexander purchased 80 acres of public land sold by the General Land Office of the United States under the administration of Andrew Jackson. [8] The land was located in "the southeast quarter of the north west quarter..."
Alexander purchased an additional 40 acres of public land in 1849.[9]
Alexander's occupation was listed as farmer in each census from 1850 until 1870. [10][11][12] Alexander's occupation is not listed in the 1880 census. However; it is likely he was a farmer his entire life.[13]
Death and Estate
Alexander died on April 1, 1882.[1] He was survived by his wife, Phoebe, and 5 of his children.
Alexander died intestate. His son William T. Van Winkle was appointed administrator of the estate by the court. Probate concluded on November, 10 1883 with a surplus of $143.90 being distributed to Alexander's legal heirs: his widow, Phoebe, his surviving children, and the grandchildren of his deceased children.
